It’s night. In a dark field in Montana, John Dutton, wearing his Livestock Commissioner jacket and cowboy hat, is chasing Malcolm Beck, the man who kidnapped his grandson Tate.

Malcolm tries to run. John shouts:

Stop!

He fires his rifle. Malcolm falls in the tall grass, shot in the chest, bleeding out.

John walks over. Malcolm is cursing: “Fucking cocksucker!”

John is calm. He says: “You deserve a lot worse than this.”

Malcolm is dying. John gives him the most chilling speech in Yellowstone history:

Or you can lay there and not telling me where he is will be your last thought. Not whoever you may have loved or your brother’s ninth birthday, none of that shit. Your entire lifetime’s gonna be reduced to my grandson’s face. It’s up to you, Malcolm.

Malcolm breaks. He whispers the name:

He gives up the location of Tate.

John keeps his word. He says: “I’ll call for a chopper. Get you to the hospital.”

John: “I gave you my word.”

John, with surprising mercy for a man who just kidnapped his grandson, asks:

You want company or do you want to be alone?

Malcolm: Alone.

As John walks away, Malcolm whispers his last regret:

I wish we’d never met.

John’s final reply, cold and perfect:

Yeah. I bet you do.

He leaves Malcolm to die alone in the field.
